Tanning & Uneven Skin Tone

What Causes Sun Tan?

Tanning happens when skin produces extra melanin as a defense response to UV exposure. Unlike deeper pigmentation, a sun tan usually sits closer to the skin's surface and can be treated more quickly — but repeated, unprotected sun exposure over time can turn a temporary tan into longer-lasting uneven skin tone.

Tan vs. Pigmentation: What's the Difference?

A tan is a short-term melanin response to recent sun exposure and generally fades within a few weeks as skin cells turn over. Pigmentation and dark spots (see our pigmentation guide) are usually deeper, more localized, and don't fade without active treatment.

How to Treat Tan and Uneven Tone

  1. De-tan regularly — a dedicated de-tan face pack or face wash helps lift surface tan buildup
  2. Exfoliate gently — supports faster cell turnover so tan fades more evenly
  3. Always follow with sunscreen — treating tan without sun protection just means it comes back
